Academy of Music Restoration Philadelphia, PA

The Academy of Music is a concert hall and opera house located at Broad and Locust Streets in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was built in 1857 and is the oldest opera house in the US that is still used for its original purpose. The hall was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1962. The ballroom was revived to its former glory and prominence by the meticulous research and craftsmanship of the project team led by Philadelphia-based architectural firm KlingStubbins.

Throughout its history, the academy as played host to the country’s finest balls, honoring heads of state, presidents, and the world’s leading musicians. However, years of use and poor design alterations have taken its toll on the oldest continuously operating concert hall in the US. Through the generosity of Lee Annenberg, the Academy commissioned KlingStubbins to restore the ballroom to its original grandeur.

Figure 2. Smart Strip™ was applied with an airless sprayer, providing an efficient solution to the complex, costly, and time-consuming jobsite challenges of removing a vast range of coatings, and coating combinations, from numerous substrates with intricate detail.

CHALLENGE - Interior

152 years of continuous use and a myriad of alterations had taken its toll on the historic Ballroom. KlingStubbins conducted hundreds of hours of design research to reconstruct the room to its 1857 appearance, accessing a variety of historical organizations and the Academy’s own substantial archives, which document the buildings original design. The removal of a wall infill uncovered four of the five original stained glass windows, which had sat covered and protected for more than a hundred years, and the careful investigation and removal of peeling protein-based paints revealed the outlines of the original decorative paint scheme. Laboratory and on-site paint analysis were used to establish the color pallet, and two months of full scale paint prototypes finalized the intricacies of the original pattern designs for the walls and ceiling vaults.

APPLICATION - Interior

After conducting numerous “Test Patches” throughout the project on various substrates, it was determined that Smart Strip™ was the safest, most effective, and environmentally friendly method to remove virtually any coating from any of the surfaces. This customer-driven technology to simplify paint removal projects eliminated jobsite confusion and the product “Green” Feature & Benefits, along with effectiveness, provided the contractors performing the work with an efficient solution to the daunting jobsite challenges. Smart Strip™ was applied with an airless sprayer about 1/16” thick and was used with and without the use of the Peel Away® Paper depending on the substrate and the number of coats that needed removed. Smart Strip™, when used in conjunction with the Peel Away® Paper enabled an extended dwell-time on the substrates with intricate detail. This was necessary to remove multiple layers of paint that had puddled or ponded over the 152 year history and expose the intricate detail. After the paper, paste and coatings were removed with plastic scrapers to avoid gauging the substrates, the surface was wiped clean with water as Smart Strip™ does not require neutralization.

Figure 3. The 155 year-old exterior decorative cast iron and metal trim needed to be restored and abated from lead based coatings.

CHALLENGE - Exterior

To remove multiple layers of coatings that included lead based paints from cast iron and ornate metal trim without removing the delicate (hand wired and bolted) substrates from the structure. Most importantly, the restoration process could not expose pedestrians to harmful lead dust, toxic or hazardous chemicals.

APPLICATION – Exterior

After conducting “Test Patches” of Smart Strip™ and Peel Away® 1 Heavy Duty Paint Remover, it was determined that Peel Away® 1 was the optimal paint removal system to restore the irreplaceable metal trim and abate the delicate substrates from lead based coatings. Peel Away® 1 Heavy Duty Paint Remover was trowel applied ¼” thick, covered with the Peel Away® Paper, and allowed to dwell for 24 hours to compensate for cold temperatures. The paper, paste, and emulsified coatings were removed using a metal scraper. Next, the metal substrates were wiped clean using a nylon scrubbing pad and water. The substrate was immediately neutralized using Peel Away® Neutralizer.
